Descendants of Benjamin M. High

1. Benjamin M. High was born June 20, 1829 in South Carolina, most probably around the Spartanburg area.
I think his parents were Sweptson W. & Mary Wingo High.
Benjamin married Margaret Martha Caldwell and they had 6 children: Perry Govan High, Susannah High Poole, John Magruder High, William Palmer High, Andrew Debois High and Hattie Rogenia High.
Benjamin died February 3, 1899 in South Carolina, probably the Spartanburg area. He is buried in the First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg Cemetery in Spartanburg South Carolina.
He and his family were founding members of that church. Then is was called New Pisgah Baptist Church.
After Margaret’s death in 1897 Benjamin married Amanda Luettia Brice. She was 34 years younger than him. They were only married for a short time because he died in 1899.
Benjamin fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side. He went in as a Sgt and came out as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the Infantry Regiment, Holcombe Legion, South Carolina.

1.1 Perry Govan High was born July 2, 1857 in South Carolina. He married Ella Mabry about 1881, probably in South Carolina.
They had 10 children: Bessie L. High Turner, Ida L. High Bishop, Alice High Williams, Sallie J. High Bennett, Andrew F. High, Eston D. High, Malcolm G. High, Hattie High, Joe High, Jesse High.
Perry died Dec. 9, 1911 in South Carolina. He is buried at Green Pond Baptist Church Cemetery in Woodruff SC. He was a farmer.

Clyde had been employed by Taylor-Colquill for 33 years as a timber inspector. He was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and choir director. He was a Past Master of Woodruff Masonic Lodge 212 and Past Patron of the Eastern Star.

He worked for Drayton Mills for 30 years. He was a member and deacon of Davis Memorial Baptist Church, member of Drayton Masonic Lodge and veteran of WWII.
Joe died May 7, 1979 in Spartanburg SC. He is buried at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

He was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and had a great sense of humor.
Andrew died Sept. 12, 2010 in Gaffney South Carolina. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

He was an Army veteran of WWII serving in Italy, the Pacific Theatre, and North Africa, where he taught French Army Officers the mechanics of Radar 264.
He was a graduate of Wofford College, Vanderbilt University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his Masters and Doctor of Theology and the University of North Carolina where he earned his Masters of Library Science.
He taught English for several years in high schools and colleges.
Thomas and his wife Katherine served as missionaries/teachers for 35 years at the Nigerian Baptist Theology Seminary,Ogbomoso and Baptist Pastors School, Kaduna Nigeria, under the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He pastored churches in Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina.
Thomas died May 25, 2010 in South Carolina. He is buried at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Spartanburg SC.

South Carolina.
An employee of The Fresh Market and a Sgt. with the South Carolina National Guard, he was an Assistant Scout Master of BSA Troop 11 at Morningside Baptist Church and of the Methodist faith. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy, a graduate of Spartanburg High School and attended USC-Spartanburg.
He was a communication specialist with the 228th Signal Brigade, a unit attached to the 151st Signal Battalion, which has a facility in Greenville.
Stephen was killed, Apr. 6, 2005, when a CH-47 Chinook that he was on went down in a sand storm near Ghazni city, 80 miles southwest of the capital, Kabul, Afghanistan, as it headed for the main U.S. base at Bagram after a mission in the insurgent-plagued south.
He is buried at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg County South Carolina.

Lois died April 25, 2008. She is buried at Old Salem Cemetery Bluffton Wells County Indiana
NOTE: I don’t think that Lois was Claude’s first wife or that Gretchen is Lois’ daughter. Gretchen’s engagement list her parents as Mrs. Ivan Justice and Claude Schlagenhauf.

1.4.1.3.1 Claudette Schlagenhauf may have married Robert H. Forbes Jr. and may have a son Robert H. Forbes III who was married to Elizabeth Ann Harrell. Elizabeth may have had a son by a previous marriage named Robert Wright.

1.4.1.3.2 Gretchen Schlagenhauf married Edward J.Turas. Their engagement was announced in the Spartanburg Herald Journal on Feb. 2, 1958 and says she is from Chicago and Union. The nuptial mass was scheduled for Feb.22, 1958.

He was a retired manager of Piedmont Salt Company, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of Boiling Springs First Baptist Church, a long time choir member, a deacon, and a member of the Steadfast Sunday School Class and the Joy group.
Joe died August 31, 2008 in Boiling Springs SC. He is buried at Boiling Springs First Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, Spartanburg County, South Carolina

1.4.7 Samuel Theo High was born Oct. 5, 1902 in South Carolina. He married Bessie Clara Turner and they had 5 children: Neva Louise High Yarbrough, William Sammie High, Henry Harold High, Bonnie Jean High Palmer, and Donald Gray High. All three sons joined the military. William and Henry joined the Navy and Donald joined the Airforce.
William was only in 3 years and Donald was in 20.
I believe he met and married Bessie in NC because that is where he started his family.
Samuel died August 17, 1973 in Spartanburg SC. He had emphysema.
He is buried at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg in Spartanburg SC.

1.4.7.1 Neva Louise High Yarbrough was born April 24, 1924. She married Jasper Yarbrough. Neva was killed when she was hit by a train on Dec 14, 1948. She is buried at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg in Spartanburg SC.

1.4.7.2 William Sammie High was born May 22, 1926 in Henderson County NC.
He married Pearl Eileen Sims and they had 4 children: Janet Elaine High, Rhonda Lynne High, Cynthia Christine High, Wilma Jean High.
He was a pharmacist mate in the Navy during WWII. He served aboard the USS Dutchess.
William died from a heart attack on Jan. 17, 1965 in Spartanburg SC. He is buried at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg in Spartanburg SC.

She moved back to NC a few years later and stayed until 2006, when she moved back to Florida. She stayed in Florida until her husband, Benjamin James Olier joined the Army and then they proceeded to move around the country. Carrie and Ben had 2 children: Haley Cheyenne Corn and Cody Tuff Olier.
